Ghost Ground: 2s Concede Without a Ball Bowled

The Hawke Trophy remains elusive for another week, as Charlesworth 2nd XI were forced to concede our home fixture against Chapel-en-le-Frith. In a display of tactical avoidance that would make a seasoned chess master blush, we decided the best way to remain undefeated on the pitch was simply not to take it. While the boundary ropes remained unclipped and the tea urn tragically cold, the record books will show a win for the visitors. It’s a bitter pill to swallow for the fans who turned up expecting the rhythmic thwack of willow on leather, only to find the serene silence of an empty wicket. We can only assume the Chapel lads enjoyed the easiest points they’ll earn all season. Speculation is rife as to why the boys couldn't field a side—ranging from a sudden outbreak of 'gardening leave' to the entire middle order being trapped in a particularly long queue at the local bakery. Whatever the reason, we’ve spared the bowlers' averages from a potential Chapel onslaught. We’ll be back next time with eleven sets of whites and, hopefully, a full complement of hamstrings. At least the grass looked lovely!
