Whaley Wicked! Charlesworth Clinch One-Run Cup Thriller

In a match that had more twists than a mountain road, Charlesworth & Chisworth CC pulled off a heist for the ages in the Bissenden Cup. Defending a modest total of 109, our boys proved that it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. Whaley Bridge looked comfortable at 100 runs, but they clearly hadn't accounted for our refusal to go quietly into the Derbyshire afternoon. Earlier, the innings felt like hard work until Gareth Evans and Sean Miller decided to actually enjoy themselves. Their 50-run partnership for the 6th wicket was the backbone of our 109-run total, with Evans playing the anchor and the aggressor in equal measure. Without that middle-order resistance, we’d have been back in the pavilion before the tea was even brewed. When Whaley Bridge took to the crease, Gareth Evans decided he hadn’t done enough with the bat. His surgical 2-8 from his spell turned the screws just as the hosts thought they were cruising. Our bowlers squeezed the life out of the chase, leaving Whaley Bridge stranded on 108—just one agonising run short of a tie. It was a victory snatched from the jaws of a very narrow defeat, and frankly, my nerves can’t take much more of this. If you see Gareth Evans at the bar, buy that man a drink; he’s earned it for the team!
