Lane Larceny: 3rds Clipped in Sunday Sizzler

A Sunday afternoon stroll at the home of cricket turned into a bit of a nail-biter as our 3rd XI narrowly failed to hunt down High Lane CC’s total. Despite a valiant effort that took us into the final over, the visitors managed to sneak away with a victory, leaving us pondering what might have been if the cricketing gods were in a more charitable mood. High Lane set a target of 153, anchored by a stubborn second-wicket stand between George Wood and Toby Julier that lasted longer than a bad haircut. Our bowlers stuck to their task manfully, though the 34 extras gifted to the visitors suggested we were feeling particularly hospitable. In reply, the chase looked on track when James Giles (37) and Edward Watson combined for a breezy 50-run partnership that had the pavilion believing in miracles. Alas, the wheels came off just as the finish line came into view. We reached the hundred mark with relative ease, but the tail couldn't quite wag hard enough to overcome the final hurdle, falling just 11 runs short with four balls remaining. It was a proper Development League tussle, though we suspect a few of our lads will be spending their Monday morning practicing their 'leave' rather than their lofted drives.
