Damp Squib at Broadbottom: Rain Wins the Toss and the Match

In a turn of events that surprised absolutely no one familiar with the relentless damp of the Derbyshire Cricket League, our Ladies 1st XI Softball trip to Broadbottom was cut shorter than a tailender’s defensive prod. The match was officially abandoned before a single ball could be sent down, leaving the scoreboard as blank as a hungover opening batsman’s memory. While the pitch was deemed more suitable for water polo than cricket, the Charlesworth spirit remained undampened. Our ladies arrived ready for battle, but instead found themselves facing the only opponent that consistently outplays us: the British summer. There were no sixes to report and no wickets to celebrate, yet the team managed to maintain their unbeaten record for the afternoon through sheer meteorological intervention. With the kit bags remaining suspiciously dry and the tea lady the only one getting any real exercise, we head home with a point apiece and a sudden craving for indoor sunshine. Better luck next time, ladies—hopefully, the next fixture requires sunscreen rather than a snorkel. We hear Broadbottom is lovely when it’s not under six inches of surface water!
