Phil’s Magnificent Seven Wrecks Whaley!

Whaley Bridge might be famous for its dam, but it was Charlesworth’s Phil Elliott who truly opened the floodgates on Saturday. In a Division 1 display that bordered on the illegal, our 1st XI defended a modest total with the kind of ferocity usually reserved for the last pie at the tea interval, routing the hosts for a poultry-like 45 runs. Earlier in the day, batting felt like uphill work in a stiff breeze. Ivan Heathcote played the anchor role to perfection, grafting his way to a vital 46. He shared a gritty 50-run stand with Mike Hollin that proved to be the backbone of our 151-run total. While Whaley’s Isaac Earl enjoyed a five-wicket haul, he was merely the warm-up act for the carnage that followed. Step forward, Phil Elliott. In a spell of bowling that will be spoken of in hushed, terrified tones for years, Phil tore through the Whaley lineup like a chainsaw through wet cardboard. His final figures of 7 wickets for just 4 runs are so ridiculous they look like a typo. Whaley Bridge lasted barely 20 overs, crumbling under the sheer weight of Phil’s brilliance. It was a clinical away day performance that leaves us smiling all the way home. If Phil keeps this up, we might have to start charging admission just to watch him mark his run-up!
