Millers Grind Out Victory Despite Ivan’s Innings of Iron

If you enjoy high-scoring drama and the occasional boundary-induced headache, Charlesworth was the place to be this weekend. Sadly, New Mills CC spoiled the homecoming party, riding a wave of luck and a mountainous fifth-wicket stand to leave us chasing shadows and a formidable total of 274. It wasn't through lack of trying, but the Millers seemed to find the gaps just as easily as our lads find the tea tent. Gareth Evans was the pick of our bowling attack, persevering through the onslaught to return figures of 3-53. He deserved a medal—or at least a very large pint—for stemming the tide while New Mills threatened to disappear into the stratosphere. Despite his efforts, the visitors’ 200-run partnership for the fifth wicket proved to be the ultimate party pooper, leaving us with a mountain to climb under the Derbyshire sun. In response, the mighty Charlesworth 1st XI showed plenty of ticker but ultimately ran out of runway. Ivan Heathcote was absolutely sublime, anchoring the chase with a classy 91 that deserved a century and perhaps a small parade. We finished on 209-7 after our 45 overs, respectable enough to hold our heads high but just short of the miracle required. We’ll take the points we can, lick our wounds, and remind Ivan that 91 is technically just nine runs away from greatness. Onwards and upwards!
