Dove Holes Bring the Rain (and the Runs) as 1st XI Stumble

It wasn’t so much a game of cricket as it was a concentrated aeronautical display by Dove Holes. Despite our best efforts to convince them that the boundary ropes were merely decorative, the visitors piled on a mammoth 309-7. It turns out that when the opposition scores 300, you need more than just good vibes and a decent tea to bridge the gap. We eventually folded for 111, leaving the 1st XI with a result that is best described as 'character building.' The Dove Holes innings was led by a centurion who clearly had dinner reservations he didn't want to miss, but Cooper Bramley refused to be intimidated. Cooper bowled with the heart of a lion, snaring 3-64 amidst the carnage\u2014a heroic shift considering the ball spent most of the afternoon orbiting the planet. Even when the score ticked past 300, our lads kept chasing, mostly because the gym is closed on Saturdays and we needed the cardio. In response, Ivan Heathcote showed some genuine grit, top-scoring with a defiant 29. He and David Wood put on a 50-run stand for the second wicket that briefly gave us hope that a miracle was brewing. Alas, the miracle stayed in the shed, and the tail wagged only briefly before the inevitable conclusion in the 28th over. We’ll lick our wounds, check the boundary cushions for structural damage, and go again next week. At least the bar was open earlier than expected!
