Hollingworth Hold Nerve as 2nd XI Fall Just Short at Home

In a clash that had more twists than a village green footpath, our 2nd XI unfortunately found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard against a resilient Hollingworth CC. Despite some heroic efforts with both leather and willow, the visitors managed to defend their total, leaving us to contemplate what might have been over a slightly more somber post-match pint. Hollingworth set a target of 151, a total that looked increasingly precarious thanks to a stellar exhibition of bowling from Ella Kassim. Ella was in devastating form, bamboozling the opposition to register figures of 3-21 and ensuring the visitors never truly galloped away. At 100 runs in the 29th over, the game was balanced on a knife-edge, but Hollingworth managed to scrape their way to 151-9 by the close of their 40 overs. Our reply started with intent, reaching the 50-run milestone in just 11 overs. Wahab Younas provided the backbone of the chase with a gritty 33, showing the kind of application that would make a monk proud. However, the runs dried up faster than the outfield after a July drizzle. Despite reaching 100 in the 32nd over, the tail couldn't quite wag hard enough, and we were eventually bundled out for 118. It wasn’t the result we circled on the calendar, but with Ella pinning bats in their creases and Wahab finding the fence, there’s plenty of optimism for next week. At least we beat them to the bar!
