Evans and Bramley Shine, But Chapel Take the Points

Well, it wasn't exactly the Great Escape at Chapel-en-le-Frith this weekend. In a Division 1 clash that swung like a rusty gate, the 1st XI fell just short, losing by four wickets. We managed to post 136 before the tea lady had even finished buttering the scones, leaving our bowlers with a mountain to climb and very little oxygen. The innings was largely a solo performance from Gareth Evans, who played a blinder for his 54. While others seemed to be practicing their 'long walk back to the pavilion' technique, Gareth showed genuine class, accounting for nearly 40% of the total score. Without his gritty knock, we’d have been defending a total smaller than the local pub’s bar tab. When it was our turn to hurl the cherry, Cooper Bramley turned into a man possessed. His 4-35 was a masterclass in making life uncomfortable for the Chapel top order, tearing through them and giving us a glimmer of hope that a heist was on the cards. Unfortunately, the hosts scrambled over the line in the 38th over, proving that sometimes even a Bramley masterclass can't polish a modest total. We’ll lick our wounds, find some more runs in the shed, and go again. At least the scenery was nice!
