Wardle’s Five-Star Show Torches Whaley Bridge!

A sun-drenched day at home saw our 2nd XI provide a masterclass in grit, determination, and why you should never leave a local derby early. Despite some tight bowling from the visitors, Charlesworth ground out a respectable 142-5 from their 40 overs. Dave Smith was the undisputed hero of the first act, playing a patient, masterful knock of 62. His half-century came off 101 balls—a display of concentration that suggests he’s been listening to the coach, or perhaps just wants to spend as much time away from the pavilion chores as possible. When Whaley Bridge stepped up to the crease, they likely felt 143 was manageable. How wrong they were. Enter John Wardle, who seemingly decided he had a dinner reservation he couldn't miss. In an extraordinary spell of bowling, Wardle ripped through the opposition like a hungry badger in a bin bag, claiming a sensational 5-6. His five-wicket haul left Whaley Bridge skittled for 91 in just over 25 overs, securing a jubilant victory for the boys in white. It was a clinical performance that moves us nicely up the Division 3 table. If Wardle keeps bowling like that, we might even let him have the first pick of the post-match sandwiches next week!
