Glossop’s Run-Mountain Leaves Charlesworth Short of Breath

In a display of hospitality that went far beyond the requirements of Division 1 etiquette, our 1st XI endured a rather bruising afternoon away at Old Glossop. The hosts treated their own crease like a five-star resort, piling up a mammoth 347 for 6 across their 45 overs. Our bowlers toiled manfully in what can only be described as a run-scoring hurricane, but the Old Glossop bats seemed to find the boundary with the regularity of a metronome. Chasing a total that required a mathematical miracle and perhaps a few deliberate distractions, we stumbled to 121 all out in just over 25 overs. Cooper Bramley was the undeniable star of the resistance, top-scoring with a defiant 43 that contained more class than the final result suggests. Sadly, the rest of the order folded like a cheap deckchair in a Peak District gale, leaving us well short of the target. Despite the 226-run deficit, the spirit remains unbroken. We’ve always said we prefer a challenge, though perhaps one involving about 200 fewer runs next time would be preferable. We’ll be heading back to the nets this week to figure out how to stop the ball from disappearing into the neighbouring postcodes. Onwards and upwards!
