High Lane Peak Too Early While Wardle Shows Overseas Who's Boss

It was a day of high drama and higher scores at Charlesworth as High Lane’s 1st XI rode their luck and their bats to a commanding victory. The visitors posted a daunting 254-7, largely thanks to a centurion who clearly didn't get the memo that we prefer our guests to be more polite. Despite the onslaught, John Wardle remained our bastion of defiance. In a moment that’ll be talked about over pints for weeks, Johnny gave the High Lane overseas player a proper introduction to the Wardle, finishing with figures of 3-58 and proving that local craft still trumps foreign flair. His spell was the bright spark in a long afternoon of leather-chasing as High Lane’s seventh-wicket stand proved particularly bothersome. Our chase, unfortunately, lacked the engine room required for such a mountain. Sam Gilham top-scored with a gritty 27, but the wickets tumbled faster than the price of a lukewarm pie. We were eventually bundled out for 142 in the 31st over, falling victim to a five-wicket haul from McCarthy. Still, we took our medicine like gentlemen, even if that medicine tasted suspiciously like a 112-run defeat. We’ll be back next week, hopefully with our shooting boots on—or at least a bigger bat!
